FAQs

All the mumbo jumbo explained...

Does tallow smell?

We purify our tallow multiple times to pull out the impurities and to get it as odourless as we can. We make sure not to over purify and we are left with a white, clean tallow. Whilst it is very low odour it is beef fat after all. It has an almost slight creamy smell to it. Once you spread it on your skin and let it absorb the smell goes away. Everyone is different, some people like it, some people don't mind it and for some it is not for them.

If you are concerned about the smell, a good idea is to give it a go and if it isn't for you, you can add a few drops of your own skin-safe essential oil and mix.

Better yet, try our sweet blend. It smells divine!

Does tallow clog your pores?

Tallow is non-comedogenic meaning it won't clog your pores. We blend tallow with organic cold-pressed jojoba oil instead of olive oil or coconut oil which are known to clog the pores.

Is tallow suitable for my skin type?

Yes! That's literally why tallow is so amazing. It helps balance your natural oil production making it great for not just dry skin but oily complexions too. Try it for yourself!

Where do you source your tallow from?

We source our tallow from local sources in and around Margaret River. We believe it is important to have close, reliable sources so we are enable to ensure that the beef we source is 100% grass-fed and finished tallow free from hormones and pesticides.

Why does my tallow have a different consistency than my last jar?

Tallow is a 100% natural product that can vary in colour and consistency from batch to batch. Tallow is dependant on factors such as seasons changing (the amount of sunlight), green grass and water the cows consume.

We use the exact same quality ingredients and method every time and we strive to keep the products consistent every time. As we create all natural products with no chemicals, emulsifiers or preservatives (the way it should be!) there will always be factors that are out of our control.

How do I store my tallow?

Tallow is a fat. Therefore it melts in the heat and solidifies in colder temperatures. We recommend storing your tallow in a cool room away from direct sunlight. The tallow can become grainy as the colder weather hits. If you rub it in your hands before use it will melt and you can then apply to your skin.

Is tallow vegan & ethical?

No, tallow is not vegan as it is made from beef fat.

Tallow is, however, a by-product of the meat industry and therefore helps to reduce waste - I in fact started using tallow when I was vegan (I still don't eat meat or dairy) because it was sooo good for my skin. This contributes to a more holistic approach to farming. We use 100% grass-fed & finished beef free from hormones & pesticides from Margaret River and surrounding.

The long shelf-life of tallow means we do not need to use synthetic preservatives that are harmful for the environment, commonly found in many skincare products. We also don't use palm oil which you find in most big brands. At PíFū we understand the importance of ethical practices and conscious of our impact for the future.
